What makes it different.

Powerwall 3 is an all-in-one home battery: the 13.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, a solar hybrid inverter with three MPPTs, and the power electronics all live in one wall- or floor-mounted unit. Because the inverter is built in, most homes don't need a separate solar inverter at all. It can take up to 20 kW of DC solar input.

How it works, simply: during the day, surplus solar charges the battery instead of being exported for a few cents. In the evening the battery powers your home before you draw from the grid. LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry is known for thermal stability and long cycle life.

It suits homes installing new solar and a battery together, owners who want whole-home backup through Tesla's Backup Gateway 2, and anyone who wants solar, battery, and (with a Tesla Wall Connector) EV charging managed in one app.

For Queensland conditions: the manufacturer specifies an operating range of -20°C to 50°C, and its enclosure rating is Indoor/Outdoor (IP 67 for battery and electronics, IP55 for wiring). In hot climates many systems reduce output at the top of their range, so we install out of direct afternoon sun with clearance for airflow wherever possible. With storm season bringing outages, the backup set-up (which circuits stay on) is something we'll design with you.

Why we install it.

  1. Inverter built in

A solar hybrid inverter with three MPPTs is integrated, so panels connect straight to the battery and there's one less box on the wall.

  2. Configurable power

Nominal output can be set to 5 kW, 10 kW or 11.04 kW to suit your supply and network rules, with 185 A locked-rotor current for starting motors such as air conditioners and pool pumps.

  3. Expandable

Up to three Powerwall 3 Expansion units can be added to one Powerwall 3, and up to four Powerwall 3 units can be combined.

  4. Whole-home backup

With Backup Gateway 2, the system detects outages and switches your home to battery automatically, and the Tesla app shows energy flows in real time.

Ask a question →

Do I need a separate solar inverter with Powerwall 3?

Usually not. Powerwall 3 includes a solar hybrid inverter with three MPPTs and up to 20 kW of DC solar input. Existing systems with their own inverter can also be AC-coupled.

Can Powerwall 3 be expanded later?

Yes. Tesla allows up to three Expansion units per Powerwall 3, and up to four Powerwall 3 units in one system.

What warranty does the Tesla Powerwall 3 have?

The manufacturer warranty is 10 years, with battery capacity remaining at end of warranty: 70%; warranted throughput: Unlimited cycles for self consumption / Time based control / backup. 37,800 kWh for other uses. Terms may require product registration. We register it for you.

Can the Powerwall 3 be installed outside?

The manufacturer lists Indoor/Outdoor (IP 67 for battery and electronics, IP55 for wiring). In Queensland we still avoid direct afternoon sun where possible, because heat can reduce performance, and we'll recommend the best spot during the site visit.

Is it eligible for the federal battery discount?

Eligible installations may qualify for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount. We'll confirm eligibility and the current amount in your quote.
